BC Mining Week: Community Fair

The Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC) (http://www.amebc.ca/ ) and the Mineral Resources Education Program of BC (MREPBC) (http://www.bcminerals.ca/) in partnership with the “Partners in Mining” BC Mining Week Committee, are proud to present the 3rd Annual BC Mining Week Community Fair as part of BC Mining Week.

The BC Mining Week Community Fair is a free outreach event designed to inform the public about mineral exploration and mining and the relevance of mining to everyday life. The event will feature a series of pavilions showcasing a variety of mineral exploration and mining displays and activities.

The general public is invited to attend. Classes of students from the Lower Mainland have also been invited. People who work in mineral exploration and mining are encouraged to attend and show support for public outreach.

The event will feature a series of pavilions that will showcase a variety of mineral exploration and mining displays and activities including:

  • Gold Panning with Yukon Dan
  • Geology tours around the Vancouver Art Gallery
  • A real exploration tent from Equity Exploration Consultants
  • A mining simulator from the Smithers Exploration Group
  • Demonstrations by the Burnaby Blacksmiths
  • A model of the Northgate Minerals Corporation Kemess Mine
  • An aggregates display
  • A BC Museum of Mining mineral uses display and dress up station
  • A stump the geologist / mineral id station – bring a rock you would like identified!
  • A display by the Geological Survey of Canada
  • A display by the BC Geological Survey
  • A piece of Finning mining equipment
  • Displays of materials from everyday life that come from a mine 

There will also be free face painting, appearances made by Buddy (the Mining for Miracles Mascot), entertainment and more! 

*** If you are interested in volunteering for the Fair, the following opportunities are currently available:

    * “Stump the Geologist” station – 1 volunteer from 12-3pm
    * “Things that come from a mine” displays – 2 volunteers from 10am-12pm and 2 volunteers from 12-3pm
    * Fossil making activity – 1 volunteer from 10am-12pm and 1 volunteer from 12-3pm
    * Geo tours around the Art Gallery (a full briefing would be provided in advance) – 3 volunteers from 12-3pm
    * Mineral ID station – 1 volunteer from 12-3pm
