The Mines Health, Safety and Enforcement Division provides oversight of the mineral exploration and mining sector during all stages of mine projects. This position is part of the Office of Chief Inspector of Mines. The Chief Inspector is responsible for mining compliance oversight, programs required to protect the health and safety of workers and the public from risk factors associated with mine operations, and mine emergency incident response.

The Senior Reclamation Inspector leads the reclamation compliance management activities for the Ministry and provides expert advice to the Manager, Technical Compliance, and the Chief Inspector of Mines. The position advises the Mines Competitiveness and Authorizations Division Director of Technical Operations and the Manager of Reclamation on compliance issues at mine operations. The position provides technical support to the mining industry, public and other government agencies to promote mining activities that will protect land and watercourses and as well as reclamation programs.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an applied science such as agrology, environmental science, natural resource management, ecology, or forestry or a related field. Preference may be given to candidates with a master’s degree or PhD in an applied science such as agrology, environmental science, natural resource management, ecology, or forestry or a related field.
  • Registered, or immediately eligible* for registration, as a fully licensed professional with one of the following: Professional Agrologist (Institute of Agrologists), Professional Forester (Association of Forest Professionals), or Professional Geoscientist (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia)). *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional in another Canadian jurisdiction referred to above, and able to transfer that membership to a BC professional association within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.
  • Minimum 5 years cumulative experience with conducting reclamation activities on a mine site, including: implementing reclamation research projects; developing reclamation plans for major mines; and practical experience with soil salvage and stockpiling, erosion and sediment control, and/or vegetation management. Preference may be given to candidates with more years of this experience.
