Lead, Regional Water Monitoring (Temporary)

Reporting to the Senior Lead, Regional Water Monitoring, the Lead, Regional Water Monitoring will be responsible for planning, supervising, and implementing regional monitoring programs to support environmental performance and compliance for projects, regional programs, and operations. The key focus areas for this role are groundwater and calcite. This position supports a one year maternity leave and will ideally overlap with the current lead for a minimum of one month at the beginning and end of the contract.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Develop and implement regional environmental monitoring programs and projects such as groundwater and calcite monitoring programs, coordinate and align with other groups, and training
  • Support water quality mitigation operations environmental monitoring and compliance requirements
  • Ensure programs meet applicable commitments, permits, and associated requirements, and collect information to inform management decisions and actions
  • Use results to confirm compliance and evaluate environmental conditions
  • Use appropriate project management controls to keep projects on schedule and budget
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to operations and water quality management teams to support integration of regional monitoring and compliance
  • Implement quality assurance and quality control, analyzing and reporting of environmental data
  • Develop best management practices and guidance to standardize delivery and implementation of environmental projects and programs
  • Lead field, lab, and data management inspections and audits to confirm standard operating procedures, guidance documents, and management plans are being followed
  • Recognize issues or challenges, develop and evaluate options, and implement solutions to address the issues or challenges
  • Build internal working relationships for the purposes of facilitating environmental education and compliance
  • Assist with the management of multi-disciplinary consulting teams and coordinate with mine operations to ensure effective coordination with and amongst sites for successful execution of field programs
  • Develop working relationships with government agencies, Aboriginal groups and other local communities of interest to support understanding of Teck’s regional monitoring activities
  • Manage contractors to ensure work is being conducted safely and in accordance with the project scope including HSEC and Environmental Protection Work Plans
  • Supervise and mentor the regional water monitoring technician who supports the groundwater and calcite programs
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, or in one of the Earth Sciences disciplines such as Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Biology, Geography, Forestry, and Agriculture
  • Will consider Diploma in Environmental Technology with relevant work experience
  • Minimum seven years’ technical experience in the field of hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality monitoring or water management
  • Eligible for registration with an applicable professional organization such as RP Bio, P. Eng or related designation 
  • Previous experience in assisting with the management/development and implementation of large-scale environmental monitoring programs is a significant asset
  • Experience in the Elk Valley or mining experience is a significant asset
  • Strong technical skills in water quality and water quantity field sampling. Both surface water and groundwater experience would be preferred
  • Proficient in environmental data management, analysis and reporting, including Environmental Management Systems and utilization of EQuIS is a significant asset
  • Technical knowledge of relevant federal and provincial environmental legislation, standards, and effective industry practices
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, in both formal and informal settings
  • Excellent project management experience with a track record that includes management and technical direction of multiple environmental projects
  • Strong analytical and decision making abilities with a proven capacity in practical problem solving
  • Ability to work productively with nominal supervision and work independently in remote locations
  • Multi-tasking competing priorities to see projects to completion while addressing any challenges along the way
  • Experience in the Elk Valley or mining experience is a significant asset
