Primary Purpose
The Pit Shifter’s primary purpose is to supervise, coordinate and schedule the activities of all mine operations personnel and equipment to optimize utilization of resources and achieve overall mine operations production objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities
Loss Prevention
• Ensure adherence to Conuma Coal’s workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
• Continuously seek, encourage, foster methods, and work with mine management to improve health, safety and productivity improvements.
• Maintain a high level of Health and Safety performance through effective communication, monitoring and revision of standard operating procedures.
• Improve on safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions and taking corrective actions where required.
• Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
• Share “best practices” between crews and inter-company.
• Ensure all mine activity meets or exceeds all statutory requirements for health, safety and environmental.
• Work with the maintenance department for all planning and scheduling of equipment to ensure optimal availability and reduce downtime.
• Ensure that equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner without damage or unnecessary delays.
• Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
• Ensure adherence to Conuma Coal’s environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements;
• Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization;
• Maintain environmental awareness amongst workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
• Work with and assist the mine site Trainers and Efficiency Engineers to achieve targeted objectives.
• Supervise, train, and develop load, haul and drill crew members as required.
• Continuously work to expand the cross-training of operators.
• Identify and communicate operator deficiencies to the Mine General Foreman with the goal to improve their role and effectiveness to meet the Company’s goals and objectives.
• Provide leadership to all load, haul and drilling activities, ensuring work is being completed in a safe, efficient and timely manner.
• Continuously performance monitor throughout shift operations and make adjustments as conditions change.
• Optimize crew and operator placement to ensure all daily production targets and objectives are met.
• Coordinate resources to maintain and enhance critical equipment performance and availability through best business practices.
• Establish good working relationships with other departments.
• Ensure that all records on machine utilization (i.e. hours, pre-start checklists and utilized hours, are recorded on a daily basis.)
• Ensure accurate and timely recording of crew and production reports.
• Analyze machine dig rates and make changes to daily operational plans as necessary.
• Ensure achievement of production targets by maintaining operational standards in loading, hauling and dumping zones.
• Report performance breakdowns, equipment damage, safety near misses, incidents and accidents according to established procedures.
• Assess performance against objectives on a regular basis as per Conuma Coal policy and take corrective action where required.
• Implement daily, weekly and monthly operational plans and objectives, in accordance with production plan requirements.
• Ensure and support operator engagement with Conuma Coal mining technology systems such as fleet management, fatigue monitoring, collision avoidance and Terrain for Drilling.
• Daily monitor coal quality pit practices to ensure they adhere to company policy as outlined in the Company’s coal quality program.
• Manage daily coal production to maximize “in-pit” recoveries.
• Implement and follow up on standard operating procedures to ensure safe and effective operation.
• Implement actions to optimize mining process performance and attain efficiency targets in the areas of labour productivity, equipment availability and utilization, and material consumption.
• Control all allocated labour to ensure maximum availability of human resources by maintaining leave register, managing absenteeism and taking corrective action where applicable.
• Accurately record employee time and payroll information.
• Participate actively with the technical services group to support the development of optimum mining short term plans.
• Monitor and continuously seek to improve employee morale.
• Identify haul roads and dumpsites that need repair and ensure deviations are rectified.
• Other duties as required

Qualifications and Experience
• Valid BC Shift Boss Certificate.
• A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience in an open pit mining environment.

Skills and Abilities
• Technical competency in mine operations standards, policies, procedures and processes.
• Ability to take full responsibility with minimum supervision for safety, production and quality of mine operations.
• Ability to interpret drill plans and effectively communicate to drill and blast work group.
• Detailed knowledge of mine equipment safety standards.
• Understanding of short and long-term planning objectives.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills including ability to effectively communicate and interact with all individuals with integrity, empathy and sincerity.
• Possess strong problem-solving ability
• Complete work in a timely manner with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to work under pressure and maintain a calm focus during hectic periods.
• A positive attitude and customer focused approach.
• Able to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
• Be an excellent team player with ability to act with good judgment, diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
• Mediation/dispute resolution skills are an asset.
• Proven ability to build and sustain strong working relationships, internally and externally.
• Be an excellent ambassador for the company and set a great example for other employees.

• Employee bus transport is provided.
