Mining & The Lower Carbon Economy

Mining is building our lower carbon future.

Mining and the electric car

  • A clean energy vehicle can require up to four times the amount of copper as a standard combustion engine and more than 600 kg of metallurgical (steelmaking) coal.
  • BC is Canada’s largest producer of copper and steelmaking coal.
  • BC is Canada’s only producer of molybdenum.  Molybdenum is used in the steel making process.
  • Aluminum is used in breaks and casings and to lighten many of the components of an electric car.  BC produces one of the lowest carbon footprint aluminum is in the world.

Mining and the rise of solar power

  • -There can be up to 50 kg of copper per megawatt of capacity in a solar cell.
  • A typical solar panel can require 20 g of silver.
  • BC is Canada’s largest producer of copper and second largest producer of silver.

Mining and wind energy

  • The average wind turbine requires about 260 tons of steel made with 170 tonnes of steelmaking coal.
  • The average 2MW wind turbine requires 5 tonnes of copper.
  • BC is Canada’s largest producer of copper and steelmaking coal.
