MABC Names Marcia Smith as the 2020 Mining Person of the Year
VANCOUVER, BC – The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) is pleased to announce Marcia Smith, Senior Vice President, Sustainability and External Affairs, Teck Resources Limited, as British Columbia’s 2020 Mining Person of the Year.
The Mining Person of the Year award publicly recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding leadership advancing and promoting the mining industry in areas of innovation, safety, sustainable development, and corporate social responsibility within British Columbia.
“The 2020 Mining Person of the Year award honors Marcia Smith for her leadership in shaping Teck’s approach to sustainability and ESG performance, and for her role in advancing responsible mining and sustainable business practices within British Columbia’s mining sector,” said Michael Goehring, President and CEO of the Mining Association of BC.
With Marcia leading Teck’s sustainability and external affairs portfolio, the company has been positioned at the forefront of global sustainability indices and set ambitious sustainability goals, including being carbon neutral across its operations by 2050. Teck was the only mining and metals company awarded the S&P Gold Class Award in 2020. In 2019 and 2020, Teck became the top-ranked mining company on both the World and North American Dow Jones Sustainability Index and is the top-ranked mining company on numerous other key ESG rankings.
“The Mining Person of the Year award not only recognizes Marcia’s substantial contributions to Teck, but also her leadership in championing responsible mining and social and environmental sustainability across our industry globally,” said Don Lindsay, President and CEO of Teck.
Marcia is responsible for Teck’s health and safety, environment, communities, Indigenous Peoples, sustainability strategy, and government and corporate affairs portfolio. Well before the current focus on ESG, Marcia worked to embed sustainable business practices and continuous improvement in environmental, social and governance performance within Teck to generate greater value for shareholders and society-at-large. Her focus extends beyond Teck to help shape and advance responsible mining and progressive public policies at provincial, national and international forums.
“Marcia has shown strong leadership in both the BC and global mining sectors, and continues to play a significant role in advancing responsible mining and sustainable practices here in BC,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. “As our mining sector drives our post-pandemic economic recovery, I’d like to thank Marcia for her contribution to our efforts in building a unique BC brand for our mining sector, and congratulate her on this achievement”.
