BC’s mining industry has an exceptionally strong safety culture. All mine site operations work under the strict safety regulations of British Columbia’s Mines Act and the accompanying Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia. They protect workers and the public through provisions for minimizing the health, safety and environmental risks related to mining activities.
British Columbia’s strong track record for mine safety is not only achieved through a strong safety culture and strong regulation, but also through the development of rigorous Mine Emergency Response plans that are continuously monitored by a network of Mine Inspectors.
In keeping with its leadership in mine safety regulation and monitoring, British Columbia’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation recognizes achievement in mine safety each year with the Mine Safety Awards and the management of an annual Provincial Mine Rescue Competition.
